Misery Bros Win Ad Award
The Misery Brothers’ first commercial Tomatoface!, made for Texas Beach Bloody Mary Mix, won a bronze “Cannonball” award in the area’s most prestigious advertising award show. We are honored to have our work recognized alongside that of the Martin Agency, Mad Box, ND&P, WORK Labs, Storywerks, Hue & Cry and other agencies. Other ads that took home bronze Cannonball awards included nationally aired ads made by the Martin Agency for Geico Insurance and Tic Tac mints, along with an ad made for nTelos Wireless by the Barber Martin Agency, an ad for Duke’s Mayonnaise made by Elevation, and an ad for East Coast Board Sports by Story Werks.
The Richmond Show is put on by the Richmond Ad Club, an organization with the mission of promoting, improving and celebrating the creative industry in Richmond and throughout the Southeast. The Cannonball awards recognize outstanding creative work in advertising. We shared our bronze Cannonball with The Branching, owned by Lucas Krost, who partnered with us to produce the spot. Main Misery Sister Melanie Mandl, who is the director of our creative projects, was specifically named as the award recipient with Krost.
Tomatoface! was written by Misery Brothers along with Rob Wooten from Texas Beach. The ad features Misery Brother Michael Bishop as the Bartender, Abbey Reddington as Carrie, Shannon Roulet as the Hungover Girl, Jessica Carey as the Goth Girl, and Lucas Krost as Tomato Face along with numerous Richmond luminaries as extras. The look of the commercial comes courtesy of our tremendously talented director of photography Mark Mervis. The ad features two GWAR songs, and Misery Brother Joe Adkins wrote and produced an original score of additional scary-movie orchestral music.
The ad was filmed in the GWARbar, and we owe a great debt to our all star art department Mike Derks, Matt Maguire and Bob Gorman for decorating the set with GWAR prop pieces and making the bar look totally kick ass. The mask for Tomatoface was made by Corotted Artistry, an art studio owned by Gorman and Maguire, and was based on a drawing made by Richmond artist Brad Douglas for Texas Beach. The mask was realized by Corotted Artistry sculptor Margaret Rolicki. Sev Gedra, also of Corotted, headed the art, prop, and makeup department for the shoot. That’s a lot of hats for one head Sev!! Speaking of heads, special thanks to stylist Belva Lawhorne for making us look good!
We would like to thank Katherine Leatherwood, Jeremy Smith, Kitchen 64 for catering, and congratulate the whole dang crew listed below for making it great and downright FUN to make!
